Lincoln road work reveals link to the past

Red bricks can be found in a number of areas around town.

"Earlier this week, construction crews scraped the asphalt from Lincoln Street – as part of the enormous reconstruction project between 17th Avenue and 29th Avenue – and exposed row after row, block after block of the original red brick paving.

My question is, why remove the bricks at all?
They have been a road bed for a very long time and have outlasted everything put down since then.
Kind of stupid in my book.
